Cubed3 Rating Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is a double-edged Dragon Sword. On one hand, it's hard to overlook the omission of both Black titles. On the other hand, the Sigma duology and Razor's Edge make for a compelling, if at times uneven, action trilogy. What the first Sigma loses from puzzles, platforming, and exploration, it makes up for with streamlined set pieces that highlight combat above all else. Sigma 2 lacks almost all the style that defined Ninja Gaiden II , but it's undeniably a smoother experience that challenges a different set of skills than its predecessor. Razor's Edge is the clear weak link of the bunch on a design level, but the mechanics are incredibly fun to experiment with. It may not be the ideal compilation for hardcore franchise fans, but Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is a great entrypoint for new fans and a solid trilogy in its own right.

Despite the remasters changing nothing, and being based on the inferior versions of the original games, the innate quality of Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 shines through in this surprisingly enjoyable compilation.

Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection PS4 review . Arguably the progenitor of the absolutely nails hard third person actioner template, Ninja Gaiden fell off the face of the earth after Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge , was released on PlayStation 3 back in the dark times of 2012. Now nearly a decade later, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have applied ample spit and polish to all three Ninja Gaiden games, remastering and re-releasing them in the forebodingly named Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection for the current generation of PlayStation gamers to enjoy. Thus, two things are immediately apparent. The first is that, for the most part, these games have aged pretty darn well (especially the first two). The second thing is that I’m old now (as opposed to just getting older when these games originally came out) and my reaction time has degenerated accordingly, making me trepidatious about how I would fare against the series legendary difficulty level.
