Like Carlton said, setup is totally unintuitive. I almost sent the switch back. Once you log on to the switch at the default IP address 192.168.1.1 (on the GS-1900-24) log back out; connect again and then "save" your configuration by clicking the gear wheel in the upper right hand corner near the titlebar. Otherwise you won't be able to manage or access the switch over your network. Other than that it's a fine, fanless switch, with a pretty robust UI and lots of options.

I bought this switch for 1 reason. We have a 20 meg fiber and I needed to split it into a 15 meg data feed for a sonicwall and a 5 meg feed for an edgewater voip box. It did this flawlessly. I can't speak to an update wiping out settings. I agree that the default ip being 192.168.1.1 is about the most horrible thing I can think of.
