I had high hopes for this bag, given its 40L sweet spot size, and that you could also attach the optional travel backpack (that REI doesn't carry). You must buy the 55L to get the daypack. It has great features, but those features take up a lot of the usable space. The padded laptop sleeve is very obtrusive to the main compartment---without a laptop in it! The harness when stowed, chews up valuable space in the main compartment as well. It's a great idea, but at the end of the day, those features take up a lot of the pack's space. I understand that the 55L ditches a lot of the features of the 40L, so there is more space, but that likely precludes it from being a carry on.

Great for quick trips and weekends. Easy to organize and fits in airline carry on bins.

I picked the older model at a significant savings from the REI Outlet. The Farpoint is fabulous: well made, sturdy, and drop-dead simple--it's just a big bag, no frills. The hide-away, padded harness is effective at transferring the weight to your hips and shoulders. The 40L volume is ideal for one-bag, carryon-only excursions and will clear the sizer on most airlines (but be sure to check). As long as you know how to pack for one-bagging, you can be out there for months with this bag and maybe a personal item like a 20L daypack There are hundreds of reviews of the Farpoint/Fairview 40L all over the web and yootoobs. Read and watch them all carefully to see if this your next travel pack but I don't think you could possibly go wrong with this Osprey.

I purchased both this and a Cotopaxi bag as I am traveling to France. I wanted one that was easy to open and reach everything packed. Though well constructed, this bag did not have an external water bottle pocket.
