After trying on one brand of boots for two weeks I was not satisfied with their fit. I returned them to the REI store in VA Beach and purchased a different pair. So far I am very pleased with the new boots. Exchange was easy, service and assistance excellent.

Comfortable, good support and grip. Haven't tried it in water so can't comment on the waterproofing

These boot are amazingly light yet super durable. They look great too. I got them in navy blue. Waterproof to boot.

The thing I noticed about these hiking boots right away was how light they were. I ordered them online because i was ready to buy new hiking boots and I've had good luck with Merrell before. This is my first experience with the Moab Speed 2 Mid GORE-TEX. I've only been hiking with them for a week. They didn't seem to need any breaking-in. They felt good the first eight mile, 2,000 vertical foot hike. I usually get about a thousand miles of hiking on my hiking boots which means I buy a new set of boots every year. Again, the lightness of these make them stand out.

Loved these when purchased as they were GoreTex and MUCH lighter that my Moab 2's. Unfortunately, IMHO, this model was riddled with two main issue for me. Firstly, the toe box in this shoe is noticeably larger than Moab 2's to the point that, even with the use of green Superfeet insoles, my feet had a lot for front-to-back and side-to-side slippage. This problem reared its head on downhill trail sections where my toes were constantly banging into front of shoe resulting in great discomfort and minor damage to toes. This leads to my second issue-the lacing system. For some reason, Merrill opted to go with a lacing system that does not "lock" when you tighten laces resulting in great challenges in getting a super tight fit (which I obviously tried to do given my first issue). Again IMHO, this lacing system serves to exacerbate the foot slippage that I experienced with these boots.
